Govt to consult coalition partners, stakeholders to open trade link with India to avert food crisis: Miftah Ismail

After devastating floods wiped outstanding crops across the country, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail once again warned that the government would consider importing food items from India.

Pakistan\’s finance minister said that numerous international organizations had asked the government for permission to transfer food products from India across the land border because millions of acres of farmland are still underwater and certain highways are unreachable.

A top PML-N leader tweeted that the government would formally announce whether or not to accept imports based on the current supply deficit situation but that any decision would be taken after consulting with ruling partners and other key stakeholders.

Due to the enormous monsoon destroying crops on millions of acres and the cash-strapped government now facing a food security catastrophe, Miftah has recently indicated food imports from India for the second time.
