ECP reserves verdict in Toshakhana case against Imran Khan

On Monday, the Pakistani Election Commission put off deciding the Toshakhana case brought against the former prime minister and PTI leader Imran Khan.

Imran Khan was removed from the position of prime minister by a vote of no-confidence in April of this year. Last month, the PML-N administration and associated parties submitted a reference to the ECP asking for Imran Khan to be disqualified.

Govt Makes Record of Toshakhana Gifts Public

Khan\’s legal representative Barrister Ali Zafar said to ECP at the hearing today that his client had sold at least four gifts he had received in 2018–19.

The lawyer avoided providing specifics when asked about the source of income used to purchase the presents from Toshakhana. Still, she did disclose that the former premier got gifts totalling Rs1.7 million in the 2019–20 year.

In the written response, he claimed, were the specifics of the presents that Imran Khan had received during his term as prime minister up until 2021.

According to Barrister Zafar, his client\’s income tax returns have been filed with the proceeds from the sale of the presents. He said a tax was paid on a 58 million rupee revenue.

The Toshakhana case came to light last year after an independent and autonomous enforcement agency approved an application and instructed the Cabinet Division to submit details regardi

ng the gifts that former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan received from foreign visitors.

However, Cabinet Division contested the PIC order, asserting it was unlawful. The overthrown administration had adopted the stance that disclosing any Toshakhana-related information would damage Pakistan\’s relations with friendly countries.
