Pakistani girl secretly joins US Air Force to evade cousin marriage
Pakistani girl secretly joins US Air Force: Hamna Zafar, a 19-year-old American Pakistani, had to decide whether to follow her American ambition or accept an arranged marriage in Pakistan. The immigrant mother of Maryland had always been the submissive daughter, but her dreams were derailed when her parents abruptly insisted on an arranged marriage.
In 2019, Zafar learned it was actually her engagement party while on what appeared to be a typical family vacation to Pakistan. Trapped and forced into a marriage she didn’t want, Zafar struggled with the cultural divide between her goals and her parents’ customs.
Zafar, not willing to give up her independence, devised a bold plan of escape, first finding safety with a Navy recruiter and then comforting herself with the family of a college acquaintance.

Zafar’s mother, Claudia Barrera, welcomed her into her home and gave her the encouragement she needed to finish her associate’s degree.
Zafar made a risky decision in 2022 and joined the US Air Force, where she is currently a Security Defender. At Kirtland Air Force Base, Airman 1st Class Hamna Zafar of the 377th Security Forces Squadron is seen carefully verifying the identity of visitors. Her dedication to her new position is evident in the installation patrol, installation access control, and base defense alarm monitoring tasks she does.
But the shift wasn’t without its difficulties. Zafar had to adjust to a new culture while in training, one in which she was the only one who had never been yelled at.
The small-framed, modest Air Force enlistee considers her experience and stresses the significance of defying social norms.
Zafar’s tale is one of tenacity, rebellion, and pursuing personal goals in the face of social and cultural constraints. Her bravery inspires others by showing the extent some people will go to in order to choose their own path in a society that frequently tells them otherwise.
